Celebrating 5 Successful Years

Where we’ve been and where we’re heading in helping to create a more sustainable demolition industry in Colorado

We’re honored and humbled to be celebrating 5 successful years in business! It’s a true credit to all the hard work, innovation, and perseverance done by our co-owners, Anna Perks and Clemente Castanon, as well as our friendly, professional, and hardworking staff, and of course our wonderful customers who have trusted us with their house renovations and deconstruction projects and shared their positive experiences working with us online.

The history of Perks Deconstruction: The spark of inspiration

Perks Deconstruction has come a long way in 5 years. It all began when our owner and founder, Anna Perks, saw a historic 1920s home in her Denver neighborhood be demolished. As she watched the house get gutted, she felt pretty gutted herself.

“It was a really beautiful house,” Anna recalled. “I spoke to the guy operating the bulldozer about what was happening and learned that it was all going to be trashed – the entire structure and all the materials inside, including appliances, were being sent to the landfill. I felt awful knowing many of those materials could be reused and recycled. And I knew Denver could do better.”

The 1920s house, pre-demolition, that inspired the concept for Perks Deconstruction

After taking some time to learn about the local demolition industry and finding that Denver had very few deconstruction resources or services, she founded Perks Deconstruction. Her background in environmental development and Zero Waste has guided Perks Deconstruction as a mission-driven company that seeks to both prioritize salvaging and reclaiming materials whenever possible through its deconstruction services, and also to create a market for sustainable building materials through its Warehouse in Commerce City, the Reclaimed Lumber Warehouse

A new frontier: Consulting and thought leadership

Another way Perks Deconstruction has grown: The company offers consulting for businesses and local governments looking to practice deconstruction or implement policies to make sustainable demolition practice widespread. Perks Deconstruction has participated in advisory council groups for the City of Boulder and the City of Denver, and has worked as technical experts as part of the Recycle Colorado C&D Council, which has involved sharing best practices with local communities and municipalities, including Lakewood and Superior. Anna Perks has also contributed as an author and editor to the Colorado Construction, Demolition & Deconstruction Policy Toolkit“ from Recycle Colorado, a statewide nonprofit organization that seeks to advance circular economies and improve recycling across the state of Colorado.

Deconstruction and Reuse Information and Resources

In addition, Perks Deconstruction regularly puts out informative and relevant news and education about deconstruction practices through its monthly enewsletter and blog, providing a free online resource for homeowners, contractors, businesses, and organizations looking to learn more about deconstruction policies and practices in Denver, Boulder, and throughout Colorado. These channels also share “reuse inspiration” and other tidbits to help showcase local reuse and repurposing efforts from our customers and peers. This outreach helps spread the message of deconstruction as a sustainable alternative to demolition, offers ways to get involved in local efforts to increase deconstruction practices, shares resources for acquiring and using reclaimed materials, and reveals the often hidden environmental, social, and economic benefits of choosing deconstruction and using reclaimed wood and building materials.

What’s to come

We’re excited to see what’s in store for Perks Deconstruction as we continue to expand our deconstruction and Warehouse operations, create more relationships with general contractors, and assist and guide cities and towns in Colorado in establishing their own deconstruction goals and policies to create a more sustainable and regenerative future for our state.

Shout-Out to Our Customers

Each person who chooses deconstruction over demolition is helping to create a less wasteful, more sustainable Colorado, and those who choose to use reclaimed materials are making a difference for not just their wallet, but their local economy. THANK YOU to all of our customers and fans for your patronage and support. We’re thrilled about the enthusiasm we’ve seen lately around these sustainable practices and products, and we’re grateful to be a part of it!

Shout-Out to Our Staff

Since our inception our field crew size has grown tremendously, and that’s all thanks to Co-Owner and Project Manager Clemente Castanon. He has recruited and trained staff one by one and has built our company’s reputation and brand by exceeding expectations on job sites and maintaining strong relationships with general contractors. Clemente and our team really care about doing a great job, and it shows in their quality of work.
